Installing a car amplifier into your car stereo system is only the first step in using it. Once the wires are connected, you'll need to set up your car stereo amplifier to get the best possible sound. By using your ears and following a few simple steps, you'll make your system sound like a pro did the job.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Set the gain on your amplifier. Look for a knob on your amplifier marked "Gain." This helps set the input level sensitivity of your amplifier. Set the volume of your car stereo to about ¾ of the maximum volume. Then adjust the gain of the amplifier to the maximum level where the sound is loud, clean and not distorted.

  2. Step 2

Set the high-pass filter. The high-pass filter sets the frequency range that goes to your full-range speakers. On some amps, the high-pass filter is either "On" or "Off." If the output of the channels corresponding to your high-pass filter is going to full-range speakers, turn the high-pass filter "On." If the high-pass filter is a knob with a variable control, start with the knob at the lowest setting, and adjust it until you clearly hear all the instruments in your music.

  3. Step 3

Set the low-pass filter. The low-pass filter sets the frequency range that goes to your subwoofer. On some amps, the low-pass filter is either "On" or "Off." If the output of the channels corresponding to your low-pass filter is going to a subwoofer, turn the low-pass filter "On." If the low-pass filter is a knob with a variable control, start with the knob at the highest setting, and adjust it downward until your subwoofer is only playing the bass and not any other instruments.
