How to Remove Rust From Chrome Wheels
Chrome wheels are an added touch that spices up the look of a motorcycle, bicycle or car. Who can resist the glint of chrome in the sunlight and the way that chromed wheels "pop" from under the fenders of your ride? However, one disadvantage of chrome wheels is their tendency to rust if they get scratched or wear over time. Even just surface rust can be unsightly and hurt the integrity of your wheel set. There is a way that you can combat rust though, regardless of how much or how deep the rust penetrates.
Things You'll Need
- 400-grit sandpaper
- Aluminum foil
- Cola soda
- Chrome polish
- Soft cloth
- Wax
Instructions

1
Use 400-grit sandpaper to smooth out the significantly rusted areas. Work slowly and methodically, as you do not want to scratch the chrome around the rust too much, if at all.
-
2
Wrap a piece of aluminum foil, shiny side out, around your finger and dip in cola. Rub any rusty areas on the wheel with the cola-soaked foil.

3
Use chrome polish to buff and shine the rest of the wheel. The polish will take off any lasting surface rust and help buff out any scratches that arose from the other rust removal methods.

4
Wipe with a dry cloth and then shine up with wax to finish the job.

Tips & Warnings
Use painter's masking tape to cover areas that you do not want to get scratched while working with the sand paper.
Properly seal the chrome with a heavy wax after cleaning up, otherwise water can get in the small abrasions you made and cause even more rust.
