Rig a Minnow

Introducing non-habitat minnow species is illegal throughout most of the United States and Canada. Some lakes and rivers prohibit the use of live bait, or certain live bait. Before using minnows, discover what types are legal for the area you are fishing. The minnows will need to be kept in a bucket of cool water, and will die if the water overheats. There are several different methods to rigging a minnow.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the minnow in your left hand (if you are right handed) and the hook in the opposite hand. Allow the minnow a few seconds to be depleted of oxygen, which will make him easier to hook.

    • 2

Push the hook under the back fin of the minnow. The hook will be perpendicular to the minnow's body.

    • 3

Hook the minnow through its lower lip, up and out its upper lip, instead of through the back, to allow the minnow to swim freely. Because the minnow is unable to breath with this method, he will die more quickly.

    • 4

Slip the hook along the spine area, in front of the dorsal fin to optimize the lifespan of the bait.
