How to Make Fire Pits

Camping just wouldn't seem like camping if you didn't have a campfire. Most campsites inside of state and federal parks will have a fire pit already made, but some of the more wilderness ones might not. Since fire is the biggest threat to any forest, it's best to know how to make a fire pit that's safe.
Even if you desire a campfire in your backyard, it's imperative to build one that won't burn the house down. Making one isn't that hard and only takes a few items and a little time. Before starting any fire, make sure you have a fire pit that will contain the fire.

Instructions

    • 1

Find an area at your campsite that will be safe to put your fire pit. Make sure there are no low-hanging trees or bushes close to where the pit is to be made. The last thing you want is your fire getting bigger than expected and catching something unintended ablaze.

    • 2

Rake the area where the fire pit will be, free of any debris. It's best to have an area of 6 feet around the whole pit, cleared of leaves, sticks or other items that might catch fire. Place any wood you plan on burning in the campfire away from the pit. You don't want it to accidentally catch fire by popping embers.

    • 3

Gather any supplies you have to make the fire pit out of and the fire in. You can make the fire pit directly on the ground, but you might have an old grill base or something else you'd like to make the fire in. If there are rocks in the area, gather some and line them around the fire pit area. These items will keep the fire a little more contained, but aren't necessary if you don't have them.

    • 4

Dig out a small area of earth where you will be placing your wood. It's not necessary to make a deep hole when digging out the area. Making a 6-inch indentation in the ground in a 2-foot area should be good enough to contain the burning wood. The indentation will also allow more oxygen to get to the wood and allow it to burn.

    • 5

Place your starter sticks and kindling inside of the fire pit, and set them on fire. Once your kindling burns well, place larger pieces of wood on it. Don't use pieces of wood that are larger than the fire pit itself. You don't want burning wood hanging out of the fire pit and starting a fire.
