Although the Wii is the only current generation console without a hard drive, it does allow you to store downloaded games as well as game saves on a Wii-formatted SD card. Although you can buy special Wii-branded SD cards, any SD card will work with your Wii, as long as you know how to use it.

From Quick Guide: Wii Games 101
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase an SD card. It must be in the SD format and have the same shape as the picture above. Any other type of memory card, such as Memory Stick or XD, will not work with the Wii.

  2. Step 2

Open the memory door on the front of the Wii. You will see a small rectangular opening. Gently press the SD card into place by pushing it, data side down and logo side out, into the memory card slot. You will feel it click into place.

  3. Step 3

Turn on your Wii. Press the power button either on the console itself or on the Wii remote. Then find the "Wii Settings" channel. This will be a blue channel with a picture of a remote on it. Selecting it by pointing the remote at it and pressing "A." A new window will pop up.

  4. Step 4

Select "Data Management" from the new window. At the top of the screen you should see two tabs, one that is for the Wii's internal memory, and the other for the SD card. The first time you select the Wii's SD card it will ask you if you want to format it. Select "Yes."

  5. Step 5

Transfer saved files. Although games automatically save to the Wii's internal memory, you can free up some memory by transferring your saved files to your SD card. Simply point your cursor at the save file you wish to move, and then press "A." A sub-menu will pop up. Select "Transfer to SD card" from this menu. Alternately you can just drag save file icons over to the SD card tab to transfer them.

Tips & Warnings
  • The Wii will not be able to read SD cards with more than 2 GB of storage, so if you download a lot of games, you will probably need more than one SD card for your Wii.
  • There is no way to store game files directly to an SD card, they must be transferred as detailed in Step 5.
