Things You'll Need:
- Thinning shears
- Comb
- Hair clip
- Spray bottle
-
Step 1
Dampen the man's hair with a spray bottle.
-
Step 2
Begin on one of the front two sides of the man's hair.
-
Step 3
Comb a diagonal line from the temple to the tip of the ear. Doing this will allow you to work with the natural shape of the man's head and eliminate any defined lines throughout the hair.
-
Step 4
Clip away all of the hair except the diagonal section that you separated. If the hair is too short to clip away, simply comb it out of the way so that you are focusing only on the one section at a time.
-
Step 5
Comb the section from the root to the tip and hold the combed section in between your pointer and middle finger.
-
Step 6
Start near the roots and cut straight across the section of hair with your thinning shears.
-
Step 7
Work your way down the section leaving only about an 1/8-inch in between cutting.
-
Step 8
Comb down another diagonal section. Work from the temple area down, leaving out the top of the head from temple to temple.
-
Step 9
Thin this section of hair the same way you did the previous section.
-
Step 10
Work your way up the side and then move to the other front side.
-
Step 11
Once you have completed the front two sections, move to the back and comb diagonal sections from the center of the back of your head down on both the left and the right.
-
Step 12
Finish thinning the hair by combing sections straight across the top of the head (the temple to temple section you left out before). Comb the hair straight up and move your thinning shears up the section.
-
Step 13
Comb your fingers throughout the hair to see where you may need to use your thinning shears again.
-
Step 14
Have the man stand or sit in front of a mirror so that you can observe the finished product. Make any changes that you deem necessary.
