Sewing your own Western-style wrap skirt is a simple project any beginner can complete. The wrap skirt is a design easily made without patterns, using only mathematics to calculate the dimensions that are right for your size. With a little added Western style, the wrap skirt can be perfect for costume play, Halloween and even everyday wear.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Large paper and marker
  • Skirt fabric
  • Trim
  • Ribbon
  • Sewing equipment and supplies
  • Measuring tape
  1. Step 1

Take your waist, hip and skirt length measurements. The length of a Western wrap skirt is usually at the knee, but it can be at the mid-calf. Take half of your waist measurement and add it to the full waist measurement. Do the same for the hip measurement to determine whether there is enough room for your hips in the top of the skirt. You may have to add a little extra to make sure.

  2. Step 2

Multiply your calculated waistline measurement by 30 percent to determine the ratio of waist to hem, then multiply the calculated waistline measurement by 40 percent to determine the hem measurement. You should now have three measurements: the waistline ratio, the hem measurement and the length measurement. Add 3 inches to each measurement to account for seam allowances and hems.

  3. Step 3

Draw your skirt pattern on a large sheet of paper. The pattern piece will be in an "A" shape, with the top horizontal line the length of the waistline ratio, the bottom horizontal line the length of the hem measurement, and the vertical distance between the two the same as the length measurement.

  4. Step 4

Cut the pattern from the paper, pin and cut it from your fabric three times, so that you have three identical pieces of fabric. Use one piece each for the left, back and right.

  5. Step 5

Stitch the skirt together at the side seams, so that the right piece is connected to one side of the back piece and the left piece is connected to the other side of the back piece. Press and finish the seams. On the open edges of the right and left pieces, fold under 1/4 inch and press, then fold under another 1/2 inch and press that as well. Stitch the fold in place on each side.

  6. Step 6

Fold under 1/4 inch at the raw edge of the waistline and press it flat, fold under another inch and press that flat, then stitch. At the ends of the waistband, stitch lengths of ribbon or folded strips of your skirt fabric, which will act as skirt ties. Next to the right side seam, make a buttonhole at the waistband through which to pull the ribbon through. Fold under the hem, press and stitch.

  7. Step 7

At the hem, attach any Western-style trim of your choice, such as fringe or braiding.
