How to Use a Lob Wedge

The best time to use a lob wedge on the golf course is when you are within 50 yards of the green, but need to hit the ball up and over a bunker or water hazard to a tight pin placement. Most golf pros recommend a lob wedge with 58 or 60 degrees of loft and plenty of practice at the range to determine how far you can hit this club.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure how far you are from your target. This distance determines how hard you should be swinging.

    • 2

Set up with the golf ball in the middle of your stance. Position your feet 5 degrees to the left of your target, what is known as more of an "open stance."

    • 3

Distribute your weight evenly, and avoid shifting your weight to your back foot after setting up with an open stance.

    • 4

Take the club back three-quarters of your usual swing with this shot.

    • 5

Accelerate through your downswing as you would with any other club. Decelerating or trying to steer the ball most likely will result in a botched shot.

    • 6

Lead the club through the ball on the downswing with your hands. This helps ensure a more accurate shot.

Tips & Warnings

  • Mastering this type of shot requires practice, as the ball will travel a short distance despite a solid swing. Familiarize yourself with how far you can hit the lob wedge near a practice green or driving range.
