Step 1
Know what you are looking for. Most people that are looking for antiquarian bookstores have a specific interest in mind--whether it be a certain author or a special edition of their favorite book. Knowing ahead of time what you are looking for will help you find the right antiquarian bookstore.
-
Step 2
Look at specialty antiquarian book websites. The Antiquarian Bookseller's Association of America (listed below under resources) offers a free search for a certain book, author, and local bookstores that belong to the association.
-
Step 3
Ask for information at other bookstores. If a bookstore in the area doesn't have any antiquarian or rare books, ask the clerk or manager on duty if they know of any antiquarian dealers in the area. Many times, they will be able to refer you to a seller who is more suited to what you are looking for.
-
Step 4
Ask other antiquarian book enthusiasts. If you meet any other antiquarian book enthusiasts in your city, at your library or online, don't hesitate to ask them where they purchase their books. They should be able to recommend a bookstore they like and give you an overview of what kind of books they carry. Getting a personalized recommendation can help you decide which bookstore you should visit first.

Step 5
Once you've found a bookstore you like, look at the bookseller's website. There are many antiquarian bookstores and independent dealers that sell their products online. If you know exactly what you want, you might choose to do this instead of going to the actual store. Additionally, if there aren't any antiquarian bookstores in your area, visit the websites of large and well-known bookstores that are in large cities. Bauman Rare Books and Argosy Book Store (located below in Resources), both located in New York City, provide online ordering options.
