As too many of us can attest to, nothing could be less fun and exciting than a computer crash. This problem is made even worse when you've forgotten to back up your data. Not only have you lost your computer, but everything on it as well. You can avoid losing critical files by backing them up on a USB flash drive.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the files you want to back up. This would be a good time to check the total memory size of these files, and make sure your flash drive will have enough room for those files. The largest available flash drives currently top out at 64GB. If your files are bigger than that, you'll want to back them up with an external hard drive instead.

    • 2

Insert your flash drive into the USB slot on your computer. Your operating system should recognize the flash drive and ask you if you'd like to open it. If it does not recognize the drive, try reinserting it.

    • 3

Select your files and drag them into the USB flash drive. If you want, you can make folders in the flash drive to keep files of different types in separate places.

    • 4

Remove the USB flash drive from the USB slot when the files have finished copying. Do not keep the drive in the USB slot when you are done. If you do, the same kind of power surge that can crash a computer could also crash the flash drive, making your backup attempts useless.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always store your flash drive in a safe, dry, cool place. Just like your computer, flash drives do not like the water or the heat.
