Most people are concerned about what they put into our children's mouths, especially during those first few years. Many are confused by baby foods on the market that claim to be organic, all natural or chemical free---how can you be sure? Making your own organic baby food solves this problem. If you make your own food, you know exactly what your baby is eating.

Things You'll Need:

  • organic fruits, vegetables, meats and grains
  • blender or food processor
  • ice cube trays
  • plastic freezer bags

    Making Your Own Baby Food

  1. Step 1

Purchase organic fruits and vegetables from your local grocery store, farmer's market or produce stand. Organic meats and grains can be purchased at your local grocery store or specialty stores.

  2. Step 2

Wash and peel all produce that is turning into baby food. Even the most high powered food processor will let some peel slip by. Rinse grains with cool water and trim all excess fat off of the meat.

  3. Step 3

Steam or boil all vegetables, meats and grains. Bake sweet potatoes or butternut squash, face down, with 4 oz. hot water for 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Meats need to be cooked well done with no trace of pink. Fiberous fruits like apples, pears, peaches, plums and apricots will need to be cooked before blending.

  4. Step 4

Place the ingredients into your food processor or blender. Blend until smooth. The consistency of the food should be very thin for babies new to solid food, pasty for older babies and more chunky for older children. Start out with simple combinations for new eaters. Choose a simple fruit, like apples, and a grain, like oatmeal, to begin with. As your child progresses, you can develop more complex combinations.

  5. Step 5

Place a serving of food into your baby's dish. Throw out any remaining food that is in the dish after feeding.

  6. Step 6

Place extra food into ice cube trays and freeze. Once the cubes are completely frozen, place them into labeled freezer bags for later.

Tips & Warnings
  • Serve the food at room temperature.
  • Avoid tomatoes, strawberries and citrus because these are too acidic and have a high allergy warning. If heating with the microwave, stir the food thoroughly to ensure there are no hot spots to burn your baby's mouth.
