How to Identify Lab Equipment
Lab equipment can be identified in a number of ways, most commonly by labeling or etching. However the equipment is identified, it should be done in a manner that does not damage the instrument and is permanent.
Things You'll Need
- Label-making machine
- Etching gun or engraver tools
- Index card
- String or twine

Identification Using Labels
-
1
Get a label machine from the office supply section of the department or organization in which the lab is located, an office supply store such as Staples or Office Depot, or a large department store like Target or Walmart.
-
2
Create a label according to manufacturer's instructions, making certain that the name of the company and serial number of the equipment is on the label. Other information may be required, so check with the department or equipment specialists at the organization. Generally, at least the name of the organization, be it a company or educational institution using the equipment, should be on the label as well as the serial number. The serial number should be in the instrument instructions or on the manufacturer's instrument label.

-
3
Place the label on the equipment in a place where it can be easily seen or is safe. If placing it on a centrifuge, for instance, putting it near the on/off switch may be good. Simply remove the paper backing on the label and place it on the instrument.
-
4
Avoid certain areas if the instrument uses or tests corrosive material. The back of the instrument, such as the back of the arm of a microscope, may be a good idea.
Labeling Using Etching
-
5
Use etching to permanently identify the instrument. An etching gun or engraver may be available at the equipment and supply office of your company or institution. You can buy one online from the Etching Metal Company and at a Lowe's Home Improvement Store.
-
6
Find a place on the equipment that does not get touched often, nor is in contact with corrosive materials.
-
7
Use the etching device to imprint the company or institution name and serial number on the instrument directly.
-
8
Use a metal label with company or institution name preprinted on it and etch the serial number on to the label. Affix the label to the equipment. If there is adhesive on the back side of the label, remove the protective paper and place on the instrument. If the label needs to be screwed into the machine, use small screws and an electric screwdriver and any other necessary materials to attach it to the equipment.
Labeling Using Hanging Placards
-
9
Use hanging placards if for some reason the lab equipment cannot have a label on it. This may be because the company or lab to which the equipment will be assigned has not been determined. These types of labels can be composed of index cards and string or twine.
-
10
Get an index card and write any important information on it, such as the probable lab and department or organization to which the equipment will go.
-
11
Staple or tape string or twine to either of the top corners of the index card. Hang on equipment until more destination information can be determined and a permanent label affixed to the instrument.
