Nothing is nicer on a beautiful day than taking a canoe trip to enjoy the outdoors. As with all recreational activities outside, safety needs to be your number one priority. Even canoeists who are not novice, should pay attention to safety when operating a canoe. Though canoes are easy to operate, accidents can still happen and one needs to be prepared.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Canoe
  • Paddles
  • Life Jacket
  • Sun Screen
  • Bug Repellent
  1. Step 1

Study the weather. Many times by delaying the trip for a couple of hours, the bad weather will pass. Also, if it's going to be turning cold, you'll want to be prepared for the turn in the weather.

  2. Step 2

Map out where you plan on canoeing. If it's a new area you'll be canoeing in, study area maps. You can also talk to someone who's canoed where you are going. It's better to get a feel for an area before you canoe there. Use areas the correlate with your level of expertise.

  3. Step 3

Tell someone of your location. Letting someone know where you're at is imperative for safety. Bring a cell phone with you along with an extra battery.

  4. Step 4

Check your gear. Make sure to have a life jacket for each person that will be in the canoe. Seat cushions can also be used as a floating device. By having both aboard, you'll be doubly safe. Bring a whistle with you to alert someone to your whereabouts if you get stranded.

  5. Step 5

Sit in the canoe with the heaviest person in the backseat position. They will act like a rudder when rowing and can control the whole track of the canoe in this position. Since canoes are quite wobbly to stand up in, it's best to remain seated and place you weight in the center section of the boat, if you do have to stand.

  6. Step 6

Bring all the other items you might need while on the trip. Pack sunscreen and insect repellent, in the event you'll need it. It might also be smart to bring something to drink and eat. Pack your stuff in a waterproof bag so it won't get wet during the trip.
