Mosaic gazing balls are an excellent focal point for your garden. They attract your eye by reflecting light from their multifaceted surfaces, making them stand out above your colorful foliage or blooms. Mosaic gazing balls differ from regular glass gazing balls in that instead of being one solid piece of glass, they can be multicolored or reflect a pattern, design or image.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Use the wire brush to rough up the foam ball. You do not want to remove large chunks of foam; you just want to create a rough surface to hold the mosaic grout more securely. A good way to do this is to gently tap the ball with the bush, then pull back.

  2. Step 2

Fill the coffee cup with extra mosaic pieces, sand, rocks or anything else that's heavy. This will serve as the stand for the gazing ball as you create it.

  3. Step 3

Mix and prepare the grout for your mosaic by following the package instructions. You want a very thick paste that is still spreadable. If your grout is too thin, it will fall off the ball and not hold your pieces on.

  4. Step 4

Place your ball on top of your coffee cup. Use the trough or paint scraper to slather the top and sides of your ball with a thick coat of mosaic grout. Leave the bottom for now. You will come back to it.

  5. Step 5

Place your mosaic tiles or pieces into the grout in whatever pattern you prefer. You can follow a template or free-form your design. See the Resources section for free templates. Allow the grout to dry.

  6. Step 6

Carefully turn the ball upside down once the grout is dry and grout the remaining bottom section. Apply mosaic tiles to the grout.

  7. Step 7

Apply grout to the top and sides of your mosaic, getting a thick coating of grout into all the spaces between your tiles. Let it set for a few minutes, then use a wet sponge to remove the grout from the tops of the tiles.

  8. Step 8

Allow the grout to dry, then rotate your ball and repeat Step 7 on the bottom. Allow your mosaic gazing ball to dry completely. Set it in your garden on the ground, mount it on top of an old bird bath or suspend it from your porch with a macrame-style hanging basket.
