The Yamaha V Star is a mid-weight cruiser that comes in multiple trimming packages. The V Star Classic features the typical beefy look of a cruiser, but has updated styling and features including full metal front fenders and valence. The Yamaha V Star Custom is a sportier ride, with cut down fenders and larger wheels and tires. The price tag is under $6,000 but the bike offers all of the features normally found on larger more expensive rides. Regular maintenance is key to keeping this bike rolling smoothly. One regular maintenance task is to change the air filter. The air filter cleans the air that is taken into the bikes internals and thus is the first line of defense against dirt and gunk getting into the engine itself.
Things You'll Need
- Allen wrenches
- New air filter
- Compressed air
Go to the right side of your bike and locate the plastic air filter cover that is located just below the seat, about where the back of your leg would come down if you sitting on the bike.
Use the allen wrench to remove the screws holding the plastic cover in place.
Pull the plastic cover off and then unscrew the butterfly nut holding the air filter in place inside the cover.
Carefully slide the old air filter out and examine it. Look for flaws, hot spots, or deformities. Use the compressed air to blow inside the air filter compartment to remove any dust or dirt that may have accumulated in there.
Slide the new air filter into place and tighten down the butterfly nut.
Slide the plastic cover back onto the air filter and reinstall the screws using the allen wrench. Start the bike up and let it idle for a few minutes to set the new air filter.
Tips & Warnings
- Reuseable air filters like those from K&N filters can save you money in the long run as you simply remove the filter, clean it, and place it back in the air filter box instead of buying a new filter each time.
