How to Wash Satin Shoes

Satin shoes, often worn at weddings and proms, as well as less formal occasions, can be dyed to match outfits of virtually any color. Shoes of this type cannot be thrown in the washing machine when they get dirty, for fear that the dye might run or the delicate fabric may be ruined. Satin shoes are best cared for when they are hand-washed.

Things You'll Need

• Sponge
• Mild soap
• Dry cleaning solution

Instructions

1. Moisten a clean sponge or washcloth with warm water and test on an inconspicuous area of your satin shoe. If the dye is color-fast, you should have no problems washing your shoe.

2. Gently rub the stained area of the shoe with your sponge to remove dirt. If water alone does not do the job, add mild soap. Hand soap or dish washing detergent is also mild enough to clean satin shoes without harming them.

3. Use a dry cleaning solution such as AFTA Spot Remover if soap and water does not get the dirt off of your satin shoes. The active ingredient called perchloroethylene (perc)in dry cleaning fluid can be an effective way to get grease and other stains off of a variety of fabrics. Dab it on the satin shoes in a well-ventilated area, as dry cleaning fluids are highly toxic.

4. Allow your satin shoes to air dry.
