Stainless steel flatware is an essential part of every kitchen, but how many of us really know anything about flatware? We know when we have a nice fork because it feels good and is comfortable in our hand and mouth. Learning to identify the characteristics of quality stainless steel flatware will help you make a wise purchase.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look for the amount of chromium and nickel in the stainless steel. It will usually be listed as a ratio such as 18/0, 18/8 or 18/10. The chromium makes the steel hard, and the nickel keeps it resistant to corrosion. The higher the second number, the better the quality is of the flatware.

  2. Step 2

Find a pattern that suits your style. There are hundreds to choose from, but unless you have separate sets for casual and formal dining, you should look for a compromise, which usually means a simple elegant pattern. Ornate patterns will look strange with a slice of pizza, while a simple elegant piece will fit in fine.

  3. Step 3

Feel the piece in you hand. It should feel smooth and comfortable. Imagine it sliding in your mouth and decide if it is too bulky. Look to see if the edges are smooth and rounded. You want the flatware to be a vehicle of transport for food from the table to your mouth, so it shouldn't be distracting.

  4. Step 4

Look for a few styles that you like that fit within your quality parameters and then look at the price value. Include the cost of the shipping if you are shopping online.

  5. Step 5

Choose a 12-piece setting if possible. It will guarantee that you never run out of flatware when you have company, even if there are currently only two people in your home. If you buy quality, the flatware should last easily for 50 years or more.
