Typically, teenagers undergo a great deal of social pressures. There are pressures to look a certain way, act a certain way and even feel a certain way. Though we were all once teenagers, adults seem to forget how easy it is to become overwhelmed by these pre-adulthood pressures. Thus, for some teenagers, communicating these feelings to the adults in their lives would be pointless. For the teenager in your life, the remedy is keeping a journal.

Hand the teen in your life a daily newspaper and tell him to write about what's going on in the world around him and how it makes him feel. It'll help him focus on what he may--or may not--be angry about.

    • 2

Try cutting out pictures of images in advertisements that may affect your teen's self image.
Assure her that she doesn't need validation from these images, but, writing about what she sees can ignite her own self-discovery process.

When an adult notices changes in a teen's attitudes, it's time to encourage the youth to voice anger in verses of expressive prose and poetry to include in his journal. Encourage him to write bluntly about his concerns.

Tips & Warnings

  • Tip: Suggest to your teen that it would be cool to customize the journal by adding pictures and clippings similar to making a scrapbook with expressive commentary. Tip: You can also suggest to your teen that using a companion affirmation books or book of quotes can stimulate thought when practicing creative writing.

  • Adults should never read the private journal of a teen in your life. Unless the teen offers to share something with you from their journal, you should not try to sneak a peek.
