Plugins let you customize your WordPress blog so it will work almost exactly the way you want. There are thousands of different plugins available. Some of the most popular plugins help you control spam, optimize your blog for search engines, add links to social bookmarking sites, create slideshows, get Google analytics and sitemaps, and add a contact form. Starting with WordPress 2.7, plugins became easy to install and update.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to your blog's Dashboard. Click on the arrow next to "Plugins" in the menu running down the left side of your screen. Click on "Add New."

  2. Step 2

Use the search box to search by term, author or tag if you are looking for a specific plugin or a specific type of plugin.

  3. Step 3

Click on "Featured," "Popular," "Newest" or "Recently Updated" if you would like to browse through lists of plugins to see what looks interesting. The lists have detailed descriptions and rating stars to make browsing easier.

  4. Step 4

Click on "Install" when you find a plugin you want to try. A pop-up screen will come up with more information about the plugin. Click on "Install Now" if you are ready to try it. WordPress will install it automatically.

  5. Step 5

Click on "Activate Plugin." WordPress will add the plugin to your "Manage Plugin" page. You will see a link for "Edit," which lets you edit the plugin's code. Some plugins have a link for "Settings." It's easier to change settings when that option is available than it is to edit the code.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you change your mind and don't want to keep the plugin, click on the "Deactivate" link. This will move the plugin down the page to the "Recently Active Plugins" list. From there, you can select "Delete" from the "Bulk Actions" menu to get rid of it.
