How to Change the Sand in an Above Ground Pool Filter

An above ground pool is a pool that is put together and used above ground. A filter is required in order to keep the pool clean; it sits next to the pool. Sand is used underneath an above ground pool in order to help level off the ground and give the bottom of the pool a soft flooring. The filter also has sand placed underneath it but is not the same sand that is used inside a sand filter. You will need to determine what kind of sand filter you have since there are a number of different kinds for above ground pools. The steps below cater to one and two piece sand filters.

  • Pull drain plug from the bottom of the filter if your filter is a two piece sand filter or one piece with a multiport valve on top of lid.

  • Watch the water drain out from the drain plug opening. For a two piece sand filter, it will drain out all of the water before you remove the sand with a cup. A one piece will drain out the sand for you, but not all of it. Use the method in Step 4 to finish cleaning out a one piece filter.

  • Remove the lid to the sand filter. This can be done by lifting up on the clamp that sits in the middle of the filter's lid. Scoop out the sand carefully.

  • Place hose in above ground pool filter. To remove any remaining sand, rinse inside with running water. Replace drain plug.

  • Place new bag of sand into the filter. How much sand is needed for your filter will depend on the size of the above ground pool. Clamp lid down onto the filter after filling up the filter with new sand.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are laterals that sit below the sand and can be damaged if you are not careful when scooping out the sand.
