Wearing your baby in a sling is a great way to promote closeness and bonding while keeping your hands free ' but how do you find the sling that is right for you?

1
Consider your body type. If you are of average height and weight, an all-purpose sling should be fine ' otherwise, look for a sling that comes in different sizes or is adjustable to fit different body types.
-
2
Think about padding. Some people are more comfortable in a sling with thick shoulder padding and padded rails, whereas others prefer slings that are essentially just a wide strip of unpadded fabric.
-
-
3
Decide how long you want to use your sling. If you plan to use it until your baby is a toddler, get something that you can adjust to fit a growing child.
-
4
Get a sling that is easy to nurse in if you are breastfeeding. Extra-bulky padding or very deep pockets on some slings can make it difficult to position a baby for nursing.
-
5
Make sure it's washable. Your sling will get a lot of use and should be easy to keep clean.
-
6
Consider safety. If you are buying an adjustable sling, double-check all rings and loops and check the sling fittings regularly for wear.

Slings patterned with small prints or in dark colors don't need washing quite as frequently as do light-colored slings.
When you see people wearing their babies in slings, ask questions. Most parents are happy to talk about what works best for them, and you may get some valuable baby-wearing tips at the same time.
Some sling manufacturers will make custom slings in your choice of fabric and size.

If you are mail-ordering your sling, double-check the manufacturer's return policy, and practice using the sling as soon as you get it - even if your baby hasn't arrived yet.
