How to Troubleshoot Computer Sound Issues
Your new PC just will not do without sound. The Internet, Windows XP as well as many other business applications and games use sound in response to user interaction. When you use your PC to make voice calls over the Internet, via Skype or GoogleTalk, having sound is all the more critical.

Go to the "Start" button, choose "Settings," an then select the "Control Panel" icon from the drop down box.

Click on the "Control Panel" icon. This will open the Control Panel window. Double-click "System."

Choose the "Hardware" tab in the Systems Properties pop-up box. Click on the "Device Manager" button.

Double-click on the "Sound, Video and Game Controllers" icon. You will see the icon of your audio device in the drop-down below.

Check in the "Other Devices" or the "Unknown Devices" group if your sound device doesn't appear under "Sound, Video and Game Controllers." It will be marked with a yellow exclamation point.

Download and install the device driver you need from the sound card producer website.

Go to the Windows "Start" button, and choose "Settings."

Select the "Control Panel" icon from the drop-down box.

Click on the "Control Panel" icon. This will open the control panel window.

Double-click "Sounds and Audio Devices."

Adjust "Device Volume", sliding tab closer to "High." Make sure it is active.

Uncheck the "Mute" box.

Choose the "Advanced" button to bring up the Advanced Audio Properties pop-up box.

Choose "Desktop Stereo Speakers" under the "Speaker Setup:" drop-down tab.

Choose "OK" when done.

Select the "Speaker Volume" button.

Set the left and right speaker volume tabs closer to "high" on the speaker volume pop-up box.

Click "OK" when finished.

Choose the "Audio" tab from the "Sounds and Audio Devices Properties" pop-up box.

Set your sound card as the default device under the "Sound Playback" section.

Check to see that the name corresponds with the name you have in the device manager.

Select the "Volume" button from the sound playback group and set the volume near "High."

Select "Volume Control." Uncheck any "Mute" check boxes.

Test you sound setup by connecting your speakers and testing it with Windows Media Player by opening an audio file.
