Things You'll Need:
- felt
- embroidery thread, needle
- sewing scissors
- fiber fill
- small buttons
- hair clips
- cardboard & pencil
- craft scissors
- cutting board
- xacto knife
-
Step 1
Ugly Dolls Materials.Gather materials to make your own ugly dolls hair clips. Have a good selection of colored felt, and embroidery thread.
With a pencil, draw patterns freehand on cardboard until you're pleased with the design. Make a variety of shapes for the ugly dolls, allowing 2" height for each doll. Pencil in facial expressions on the cardboard patterns. -
Step 2
Making ugly dolls patterns.Cut out patterns outside the pencil lines with craft scissors. Create curvier ugly dolls hair clips using an xacto knife to accentuate the details as scissors may bend the cardboard patterns in certain areas.
-
Step 3
Cut felt pieces.Trace cardboard pattern of each ugly dolls hair clip on two pieces of felt in the same color. Trace pattern with face side up and wrong side of pattern laying on the wrong side of felt piece.
Flip pattern over and trace the other side also on the wrong side of the felt. This method ensures you will have two pieces coming together as one all facing the same "direction".
Trace using a pencil, ball point pen, or you may find a plain piece of chalk will work well. Cut felt just outside traced lines. Consider the side of the felt with the pencil edges to be the inside of each ugly doll. -
Step 4
Embroider ugly dolls faces.Make your own ugly dolls hair clips with distinct personalities. Embroider ugly doll expressions on right side of felt, following the facial features already sketched on the patterns. Use 3-strands of thread by dividing the basic 6-strand skein in half.
With wrong sides together and starting at the bottom of the ugly dolls hair clips, begin straight stitching close to edge. Continue sewing. -
Step 5
Stuff ugly dolls hair clips.Leave opening at bottom of ugly doll hair clip large enough for your little finger, without cutting embroidery thread. Begin stuffing small amounts of fiber fill into the hair clip.
Start stuffing with little finger. Use the eraser end of a pencil to insert stuffing further. Continue until ugly dolls are full. Sew opening shut and tie off end of thread. -
Step 6
Secure hair clips.Select a hair clip for each of the ugly dolls. Using the same colored embroidery thread as was used to sew the seam on dolls, center hair clips and tack securely on the back of ugly dolls.
-
Step 7
Ugly Dolls Hair Clips.Make your own ugly dolls hair clips as individual as you wish. Note the expressions are what give the ugly dolls their name, so it's hard to make a mistake. The uglier the better when you're making ugly dolls. Aren't they cute? :)
