Gas grills generate their own heat in order to cook foods, but if you desire that aroma and taste of charcoal in your meats, poultry and seafood, you can add charcoal to the gas grill. It requires more time than a gas grill (gas grills take about 10 minutes to heat up and are easy to clean) but charcoal grilling provides a more leisure activity.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Gas grill
  • Gloves
  • One bag of charcoal briquettes
  • Food
  • Charcoal poker
  • Spatula
  • Plate
  • Newspaper
  • Matches
  • Grill brush
  • Sponge
  1. Step 1

Remove the gas components of the grill to avoid any sort of fire or explosion. Remove the propane tank, and if your gas grill has tubing at the base of the grill, remove this as well.

  2. Step 2

Remove the grid, which is the upper grill rack where you place the meat or vegetables to cook and covers the lower part of the grill where the flames come from.

  3. Step 3

Crumble up about five sheets of newspaper into balls and scatter around the bottom of the grill. This will be under the charcoal to help it catch fire.

  4. Step 4

Stack the charcoal briquettes in a pyramid in the bottom of the gas grill. Use a couple of matches to light the charcoal and newspaper around the edges. Blow steadily on the embers to get them going.

  5. Step 5

Let the charcoal flame up until it dies down a little bit (about 10 minutes). At this point, the charcoal will have a thin coating of gray ash over each briquette. Use the poker to spread the charcoal around. Replace the grill rack securely.

  6. Step 6

Make sure the grill rack is clean with a grill brush, or a quick brushing of a damp sponge. Place the meat or vegetables onto the grill rack when it is very hot. Brush with seasoning, marinade or olive oil. You can keep the cover open or shut, but shutting the top of the grill will make it hotter and help seal in a charcoal flavor.

Tips & Warnings
  • Open the air vents of your grill if there are any. This will assist in helping the charcoal burn better from increased airflow. If you do not want to remove the gas grill components, make sure that they are connected properly, as you can use the gas burners to light the charcoal. To do this, add the newspaper and the charcoal as directed, and press the button in order to light them.
  • Make sure the grill is set up on a nonflammable surface. Make sure it is not near anything that could catch fire.
