Make a Paper Treasure Chest

A fun project to make with your children is a paper treasure chest. The paper treasure chest will work as a prop for a school play or can be used by young buccaneers when playing pirates. It all begins with a large paper grocery sack.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Open a large paper sack and stand it up.

  2. Step 2

Cut off the top half of the sack near the natural fold line.

  3. Step 3

Cut four pieces of cardboard, two the same size as the front and back of the sack, and two the same size as the bottom of the sack. Glue one of the bottom pieces to the bottom of the sack, and glue the second piece inside the sack, on the bottom. Glue the other two pieces to the front and back of the sack. Allow to dry.

  4. Step 4

Cut two pieces of cardboard in a rectangular shape, a few inches longer than the dimensions as the side of the sack. Cut the top into a curved shape, that extends above the bag.

  5. Step 5

Glue the two pieces to the sides of the sack. Allow to dry. Cover all of the seams with masking tape.

  6. Step 6

Cut a piece of sack paper for the lid. This should be large enough to wrap over the curved side sections, to make a curved lid. Attach the lid to the chest with masking tape as the hinge. Put masking tape on the inside and outside as a lid hinge.

  7. Step 7

Lay plastic wrap over the curved and upper edge of the box, to protect it from getting wet when you finish the lid.

  8. Step 8

Mix together the flour and water in a bowl and blend well. Paint the lid with the flour solution, bending the paper to make a curved lid. Cut out another piece of sack paper, the same size as the lid. Use the flour solution to attach the two pieces, making the lid two layers of paper. When the paper drys, it should form a curved lid.

  9. Step 9

Cut the rest of the sack paper into strips and coat the outside of the chest with strips of sack paper. Dip each strip into the flour solution, and wipe off excess liquid. After the chest is covered, allow to dry. Remove the plastic wrap and paint the chest as a treasure chest when complete.
