How to Make a Yarn Boa
A yarn boa is a fancy scarf made with lightweight textured yarn. It can be any color or combination of colors and is used to decorate an outfit rather than to keep warm. Making a yarn boa is very easy to do if you know how to knit. When you use large knitting needles, it's a quick craft that makes a fabulous gift. You can knit a very simple but gorgeous yarn boa in an evening while watching television.
Things You'll Need
- 2 balls of textured yarn that weigh 1 3/4 oz. each
- Pair 10.5 bamboo needles (or plastic or metal needles)

Choose the color and style of your textured yarn. Cello yarn or Moda-Dea are good brands. They're 100 percent polyester and come in a large variety of colors. Because the yarn is relatively thin, the yarn boa you knit will be lightweight and loosely woven. Buy two 1 3/4-oz. balls of yarn.

Cast on 20 stitches using 10.5 bamboo needles. This will look like a very narrow band of stitches until you have completed the first few rows. Then the yarn boa will begin to take shape and you'll be able to see how wide the finished scarf will actually be.

Knit across the row. Turn the yarn boa and knit back. Continue to knit until the yarn boa is at least 30 inches long. You can make your yarn boa as long as you want, but you may need to buy additional balls of yarn to finish it. Cast off the last row of stitches to form a finished edge.

Add a short fringe by cutting 40 3-inch lengths of yarn. Fold the piece of yarn in half. Insert the folded loop into the hole left by the first stitch you casted off. Pull the loose ends of the piece of yarn back through the loop to make a knot around the end of the scarf. Repeat for each of the holes left where you casted off each stitch on that end of the yarn boa. Then do the same thing on the cast-on end of the yarn boa.
