How to Stop Telemarketers From Calling a Business Phone Number

The National Do Not Call Registry makes it easy for private individuals to avoid having to deal with telemarketers. Unfortunately, businesses are not allowed to use it. In order to stop telemarketers from calling your business, you will have to get it put on their do-not-call list.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask whether the telemarketers are calling to sell you something. A telemarketing company is legally required to answer this question honestly.

    • 2

Ask for the name of the caller and the name of the organization he is calling for. Record this information in a telemarketing log, along with the time of the call.

    • 3

Ask for the number of the telemarketing company she is calling from, including the area and country code. Record this in your log.

    • 4

Ask if the company maintains a do-not-call list. The caller should answer in the affirmative. Instruct him to add your number to that list.

    • 5

Ask if the telemarketing firm you are being called from represents any other companies. Often, a single phone bank will handle telemarketing calls for several different companies. If this is the case, ask for the names of those companies and record them. Then, ask to be added to the do-not-call list for those companies as well.

    • 6

If you receive further telemarketing calls, make sure they are not from the same company. If they are, inform the company that you have already requested to be added to the do-not-call list and it is violating the law by calling you again. Generally, asking to be added to the do-not-call list is enough, but if not, this warning should take care of the problem.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the caller seems confused or nervous, you can ask to speak to his supervisor. Then, have the supervisor answer your questions.
