Step 1
Remove any old line from the reel. If you aren't sure about the quality of your old line, remove it and replace it with fresh line rather than learn that it's no good the hard way as you lose a fish from it breaking.
-
Step 2
Thread the new line through the eyes of the jigging pole. Be certain that the new line goes through each of these tiny eyes cleanly.
-
Step 3
Open up the bail on your ice fishing reel and tie the line to the bobber. Make sure the bail is open when you do this; if not, when you go to reel in the line to spool it around your bobber, the line won't twirl around it. Tie the line with a couple of knots so that it is attached to the bobber.
-
Step 4
Close the bail and begin to slowly turn the handle of the reel. As you do so, you'll be spooling the new line around your reel. Hold the new line somewhat tightly between your knees as you reel so that it wraps tightly around the bobber.
-
Step 5
Stop reeling when the line is about 1/8 inch from the lip of the bobber. Too much line will cause the line to become unraveled easily. Cut the line and attach a swivel to it so you can hook it onto one of the eyes of the ice fishing rod until you plan to use it.
