The toilet fill valve is the object that determines the level the water comes up to in the toilet tank. If this isn't working then the water is sent into the overflow pipe, which will send the excess water into the toilet, but the toilet could overflow if the problem continues. In takes about 20 minutes to remove the toilet fill valve.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Turn water off. Turn the valve that is under the tank of the toilet and behind the bowl. Turn it counterclockwise to turn it off. Remove lid to the tank of the toilet. Flush the toilet and make sure all of the water is out of the tank. Wipe the excess water out of the tank with a dry sponge.

  2. Step 2

Remove the nut below the toilet tank. Use pliers to remove the nut and then remove the washer and lock nut that are all connected below the tank that connects the water supply line to the tank.

  3. Step 3

Lift the pipeline out of the overflow tube that is connected to the fill valve. Then take out the toilet fill valve. It is on the left side in the tank. It will hold a rubber-type ball that floats in the water when the water reaches its limit in the tank. The toilet fill valve will come right out.

  4. Step 4

Replace the toilet fill valve with a new one. Place it through the hole where you removed the original one. Replace the lock nut by twisting it on clockwise and place the washer below it and then the nut. Be sure to twist nuts to where they are tight, but not so tight that you cannot remove by hand.

  5. Step 5

Place the pipeline from the fill valve into the overflow tube. Turn water supply back on. Put tank lid back on.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid tightening nuts too tightly. This could crack the tank.
