Mud face masks have been used for centuries to tone and revive the skin. A mud face mask removes oils, impurities and dead skin cells that contribute to the formation of acne. In addition, the hardening process of the mud face mask is a natural skin toner. According to certified aromatherapist Beverly Hlavka, mud or clay masks "draw toxins out of the skin like a magnet and they restore the skin back to a natural balance."

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 T water
  • 2 T lemon juice
  • 2-3 ounces Fuller's Earth Clay
  • 1-2 drops Tea Tree Oil
  1. Step 1

Add the water and lemon juice gradually to the clay in a small bowl. Stir until a paste forms.

  2. Step 2

Let the mixture sit for a few minutes to allow the mud to soak up the liquids. Add more water if necessary.

  3. Step 3

Add 1-2 drops of the Tea Tree Oil to the paste, stirring until mixed thoroughly.

  4. Step 4

Smooth the mixture over your entire face and neck in gentle circular movements, approximately 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. Leave a half inch border around the hairline while avoiding the eye and mouth areas.

  5. Step 5

Let sit for 10 to 15 minutes then rinse with warm water. If you have sensitive skin, leave the mask on for 5 minutes only.

  6. Step 6

Repeat this process no more than once a week to avoid excessive drying of the skin.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wash then gently towel dry your face before applying the mud mask. Fuller's Earth Clay is available from most health food stores and online herb shops.
  • Consult your physician if you have any allergies or skin conditions that are of concern. If you feel any discomfort while using the mask, rinse immediately and discontinue use. Use only cosmetic grade mud or clay.
