How to Make a Slytherin Scarf
A Slytherin-style scarf is the perfect winter wear for fans of the "Harry Potter" book and film series. This scarf, which copies the style of those worn by younger members of the Slytherin house, is a gray and green striped classic that is simple to make as long as you have a firm grasp on basic knitting skills. The scarf is evenly striped, very long and authentic enough to please any "Harry Potter" buff. The scarf can also be knitted using the colors of a different Hogwarts house if Slytherin isn't your favorite.

1
Cast on 40 stitches in the green yarn. Work 20 rows in stockinette stitch, knitting one row then purling the next, in the green yarn.
-
2
Switch to the gray yarn at the end of the 20th row. Cut off the green yarn, leaving a six-inch tail. Line up the green and gray yarn tails, knot them together, and begin working the scarf in the gray yarn. Work 20 rows in stockinette stitch in the gray yarn, then switch back to the green yarn.

Continue in this fashion, switching off every 20 rows, until you have knitted 10 green stripes and nine gray stripes in stockinette stitch. The scarf should begin and end with green stripes.
-
4
Bind off the end of the scarf, leaving a 6-inch tail, and use a tapestry needle to weave all the tails into the fabric of the scarf.

Tips & Warnings
This pattern can also be used to create the scarves from the rest of the "Harry Potter" houses, simply by changing the colors. The Gryffindor house, for example, would be dark red and gold. Keep in mind that the darker color always has 10 stripes and the lighter color always has nine stripes.
