      Look at the wire. The white wire is neutral.
      If your wire is not color-coded, go to Step 2.

      Look at the screws the wires went to. The silver screw is always neutral. This is the same for the wire. Look at the actual wire. The silver wire is always neutral; copper is hot.

      Use an electrical pen tester to make sure of your decision. With the wires live, aim the tester to the wires. The wire that is hot will make the pen beep. The other wire will be neutral.
