How to Improve Flexibility in Your Career Goals
With high unemployment, workers need to allow for some flexibility in their career goals. What is done during off hours or while unemployed can make a difference and produce more options for a satisfying career. The days of one career at one company have been replaced by high unemployment, lack of employability and outsourcing. By doing some strategic planning an individual could move seamlessly from one career to another if necessary.

Write down your skill sets. What do you know how to do well enough that it could make you income. Do you do web design, organize groups at church, or know how to fix food? When writing down your skill sets, write down what your current or past jobs required you to do.

Assess education and training. One of the most under used resources is education benefits. Use them. Online learning is a great option. Having some training allows for much more opportunity.

Strengthen your computer skills by learning software in the area of interest. Microsoft has great free tutorials on their programs. You can download evaluation copies of programs free online through Microsoft.

Evaluate your hobbies and volunteer projects. What do you love doing during your off hours? Not all skills come from paid employment. Some of the best come from hobbies, and volunteer experience in the community.

Get a mentor. A mentor is sort of a role model in an area. You can find a mentor in various ways, such as joining a mentoring program at an association or chamber of commerce, attending seminars or going directly to a person. Getting mentored by the right person can increase your options and give you confidence to explore more options.
