How to Make an Illusion Necklace

An illusion necklace is a dainty one to three strand piece that is worn close to the throat. The materials used create the illusion that beads and gems are floating on the skin with no visible means of support. The Tigertail cable material is a stronger, more durable base for the illusion necklace. Mono-filament and other nearly invisible materials break more easily than Tigertail cable with a jewelry piece that is worn often.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Crafter's round nose or crimping pliers
  • Tigertail necklace cable
  • Crimping beads
  • 3-5 4mm Decorative beads
  • Wire cutters
  1. Step 1

Lay the materials you plan to use out on the work table. If you have a beading tray, you can set your beads into it.

  2. Step 2

Cut a piece of Tigertail cable that will fit the neck plus five inches. Place a crimping bead on to the Tigertail cable. Thread the end of the Tigertail cable through the large link next to the lobster claw on your clasp with an excess of a half inch of cable.

  3. Step 3

Push the crimping bead up over the excess end of the cable snugly under the clasp link. You will notice that the main cable and excess ends both run through the bead. Crimp the bead with the pliers to secure the clasp on to the cable.

  4. Step 4

Place the clasp and Tigertail cable on to your work surface.

  5. Step 5

String one crimping bead, one decorative bead and a second crimping bead on to the cable. Follow with two to four more sets of crimping beads and decorative bead sections.

  6. Step 6

Move the beads on the cable to determine the spacing you would like for the necklace. Use the pliers to crimp the center set of beads to secure them in place. Repeat with other beads.

  7. Step 7

Thread a final crimping bead on the Tigertail cable. Thread the cable through the clasp jump ring and repeat the process in Step 2 to secure the end of the necklace. Cut excess cable away with wire cutters to give the finished look to the illusion necklace.

Tips & Warnings
  • You 'crimp' the crimping bead by squeezing it. The bead pinches in on itself creating a solid piece over the cable. You should not be able to pull the cable through the crimped bead at all.
