Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Observe communication skills from people who are effective communicators. While communication skills are personal and unique, you can learn a lot by seeing how others communicate. Note what they do well and try to emulate effective methods. Also, see how others respond to different communication techniques.

  2. Step 2

Listen to others. Don't try to get your points across until you know how others respond. You can find out about others by simply listening to them. By listening, you can determine what special interests are important to them.

  3. Step 3

Find common ground before trying to communicate with others. While listening and talking to others, you may find you have little in common with the people you are trying to communicate with. Try hard to find something that you both have in common. You will find that despite your first impression, there are at least a few things that you both can identify with.

  4. Step 4

Ask others if you are communicating effectively. Many people feel they are good communicators, but they are really not. To find out if you are getting your point across, ask the other person to repeat what you just told them--not just the words, but what you really meant. You may be surprised at what you thought was effective communication was totally misunderstood.

  5. Step 5

Try different ways to communicate. If you are not getting your point across, it may help to communicate in other ways. Some people are more responsive to visual or written communication because they don't process words or thoughts as fast. Try a few different ways to make your message clear.

Tips & Warnings
  • Communication skills need to be constantly worked on. There are always different people and situations and one particular way to communicate may not always work.
