1
Take your time. The first mistake almost every Internet backgammon player makes is feeling like they have to rush in order to keep their opponent interested in the game. This often leads to foolish mistakes. And, further, since you have no control over the other person's commitment to finishing the game, you should focus on what you can control: your own game.
-
2
Risk single checkers in order to maximize your die rolls. Too often, players play too conservatively, trying to keep their checkers from being hit. This often leads to wasting partial or whole die rolls since your pieces are bunched up on fewer points. Spreading your pieces out gives you more chances to win the race to the end.

3
Hit your opponent's checkers only when it is in your favor. Just because you can send a piece back does not mean that you should. Sometimes, forcing a checker back will give your opponent more opportunity to block you in your home board.
-
4
Limit your blocking and trapping moves to two or three checkers. Stacking any more checkers on a single point will significantly decrease your ability to make use of your die rolls, as noted in Step 2 above.
-
5
Focus on the race, or eliminating your own pieces from the board, rather than on preventing your opponent from advancing. In backgammon, offense usually wins over defense, since there are more options for offensive moves than defensive ones.

Tips & Warnings
If you are using the doubling cube, avoid spending too much energy worrying about it. MSN only ranks you by wins, not by the points involved in the win.
