In the UK, there are two types of careers that are focused on healthy eating: nutritionists and dietitians. Dietitians are the only people who are certified and able to offer dietary advise to ill patients. While a nutritionist can be a registered dietitian, he can also work in many diverse settings outside of clinics and hospitals.

The Nutritionist Society is the primary organization representing nutritionist professionals and organizations in the UK. It provides information by and for nutritionists in the UK area, including how to get your career started in nutrition.

Becoming a Registered Nutritionist in the UK

  1. Step 1

Take an undergraduate or graduate course in nutrition that is recognized by the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists. The Voluntary Register is respected for its high standard of educated and talented UK-based nutritionists. Because of this, it's highly desirable for your education to comply with its standards.

  2. Step 2

Register with The Nutrition Society after receiving your degree. Registration will make you more employable and will demonstrate to the public that you're a trustworthy nutritionist.

  3. Step 3

Choose what type of career in nutrition you'd like to pursue. There are four general categories in the UK: health improvement, research, industry, and nutrition in government and policy. A minimum of a bachelor's of science degree in nutrition is required for all but the health improvement sector.

  4. Step 4

Have good IT skills. The ability to use computer programs like Microsoft Office and conduct research online are a must for a nutritionist in the UK.
