Fountains are an exciting way to spruce up lawns, gardens or greenhouses. The sound of running water produced by a fountain can have a soothing effect, and fountains can also increase the amount of moisture in the air. Store-bought fountains can be expensive and difficult to match to your unique layout. Luckily, you can make a small garden fountain using a few flower pots, a fountain pump and some plastic tubing.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Power drill
  • Medium flower pot
  • Small flower pot
  • Plastic tubing
  • Fountain pump
  • Large flower pot
  • Decorative rocks
  1. Step 1

Drill a hole with a large drill bit on the side of the medium flower pot. Ensure the hole is large enough for the power cord from the pump to fit through.

  2. Step 2

Drill another hole in the bottom center of the medium pot and another in the same place on the small pot. The hole should be just large enough to hold the plastic tubing, so you should check the size of the tube with the size of the drill bit before drilling.

  3. Step 3

Drill four equally spaced holes around the lip of the medium pot for drainage. Place the pump at the bottom of the largest pot. Push the power cord through the hole in the side of the medium pot.

  4. Step 4

Attach one end of the tubing to the fountain pump. The tubing should extend to about 6 inches longer than the height of the medium and small pots. Turn the medium pot upside down and thread the tube through the hole in the bottom center. Then thread the tube through the hole in the bottom center of the smallest pot.

  5. Step 5

Place the medium pot upside down in the large pot so that it sits slightly inside. Set the small pot upside down on top of the medium pot. Cut away all tubing that extends longer than 1 inch above the smallest pot.

  6. Step 6

Put the decorative rocks over the top of the smallest pot to hide the tubing. Do the same around the lip of the medium pot to conceal the four drainage holes. Add water to the fountain and plug in the power cord to initiate the water flow.

Tips & Warnings
  • The decorative rocks can be replaced by any number of small, hard objects. Marbles, river stones, gravel, pebbles or crystals can all be substituted for a different appearance. Try painting the flower pots to create a truly customized small garden fountain.
