How to Play a Second Inversion D Major Triad on the 6th String

The second inversion D major triad on the sixth string contains all the same notes, D F# A, as the more commonly used open-position D chord. Since both chords share the same notes, they can be used interchangeably in any song containing a D chord. Learning to play the second inversion D chord gives you a second harmonic color during any song played in the key of D or containing a D chord.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Instructions

1. Lay your left-hand middle finger on the sixth string, fifth fret to sound the note A.

2. Position your left-hand ring finger on the fifth fret of the fifth string to produce the note D.

3. Place your left-hand index finger on the fourth string, fourth fret. This is the note F#.

4. Leave the top three strings of the guitar free as they are not a part of this chord.

   Pluck or strum all three notes to sound the second inversion D major triad on the sixth string. Refer to the given example if needed.

Tips & Warnings

• Do not use your right hand to mute the top three string. Instead, let your left-hand index finger lightly touch those strings which will cause them to be muted.
