Things You'll Need

  • Newspaper or plastic drop cloth
  • Carbide scraper or grout saw
  • Dremel rotary tool with carbide tip
  • Hammer
  • Chisel
  • Eye protection
  • Dust mask

      Cover the surrounding area with newspaper or a plastic drop cloth.

      Notch a groove in the grout with a carbide tip scraper, grout saw or Dremel rotary tool. This may take a bit of elbow grease with the hand tools, however the rotary tool should cut through in a few passes.

      Continue to enlarge the gap by scraping away at the hardened grout in the crack.

      Use a hammer and chisel to remove stubborn areas. Angle chisel away from the tile so that you don't create cracks or chips.

      Continue using same technique until all grout is removed.

      Make a clean edge on the hollowed-out grout lines by scraping with a carbide tip scraper. This will create a clean surface for the new grout to bond.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always wear eye protection when removing grout. In addition, consider using a dust mask, especially if you have airborne allergies.
