How to Write a Graduation Announcement

A graduation marks an important accomplishment. No matter if someone is graduating from high school, college, law school, medical school or graduate school, it's important to recognize the graduates in your life by writing and sending out graduation announcements. Such announcements provide an opportunity to inform others about someone's achievements, especially those who may not be able to attend a graduation ceremony.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin the announcement with a statement of congratulations. There are many ways to announce the graduation. Include parents' names, a short poem or another word of wisdom. For example, "Please join the Doe family in congratulating," or "We would like to express our congratulations to." (See Resources.)

    • 2

Add the graduate's full name to the statement of congratulations. Place the graduate's name on a separate line. Bold and center the name and make the font larger. For example, "Please join us in congratulating Jane Doe."

    • 3

Add educational information, such as what type of degree is being earned, the name of the institution awarding the degree and the date of the degree. Include the date, time and location of the graduation ceremony for those who want to attend. For example, "Please join us in congratulating Jane Doe. She will be awarded a master's in Journalism from the University of Utah on December 21, 2009."

    • 4

Include information about a graduation party, if one is being held. Some schools will have a small party following the graduation, or maybe you plan to throw a special party to honor the graduate. Be sure to list the date, time and location of the party on the announcement.

    • 5

Write an extra statement of acknowledgment for the graduate's achievements. For example, "Jane has worked diligently to complete her graduate degree while working as a part-time copy editor at the local newspaper." Include any information that you think is relevant and that praises the graduate.

    • 6

Include a recent, professional-looking photo of the graduate on the announcement.

    • 7

Format the announcement in a stylish way. Use the school's colors, for example. Include a page border on the announcement. Choose a stylish font for the text and make the text large.

    • 8

Print the announcements on thick, parchment-type paper.
