Instructions

    • 1

Wind up your body and spin in the air without your board before attempting any spin. Get the feel of the momentum required to make a complete turn or a half turn. Put your whole body into the spin. Practice on the snow just in front of the hill over which you'll jump to help visualize the actual jump.

    • 2

Practice spinning on the ground with your board before attempting to spin on the slopes. Feel the sensations of turning on the board. Move to a platform and practice spinning in one place within certain parameters to gain control of the spinning and the landing.

    • 3

Learn how to carve as you are gliding downhill. Lean onto the front of the board so that you are riding on the edge of the board. This is the position you'll need to be in to accomplish a successful spin.

    • 4

Start with a frontside 180. It's the easier spin to learn because you are facing the landing the entire time you're airborne. Practice the 180 anywhere on the slope by bending low to the board and using your toes to push up. Start to spin with your head and shoulders. Use your arms to provide momentum and stay centered on the board to avoid falling when you land.

    • 5

Keep your body low to the center of gravity as you approach the kicker over which you'll try the backside 180. You'll be flying blind while in the air. As you turn, spot your landing. Prepare to land by bending your knees and relaxing your body to absorb the impact.

    • 6

Move into the 360 backspin once you've mastered the front and back spins. Wind up toward the jump in the opposite direction of the spin. Line up your board in the final approach to the jump so that you are heading at it straight on. Start winding up as you make the final approach to the edge of the jump. Face the rear of the board to your left as you approach the top of a hill and turn using your entire body.
