With so many hair-coloring products, you may not know what to do. Is it better for the hairdresser to color your hair? Do you pick a permanent color or a semi-permanent color? Should you highlight your hair? Will you look good with that color choice? Before coloring your hair, decide why you want a color change. If you want to cover gray, you will probably stick with a color close to your own. For something bold, you may want to try a temporary color. Once you understand some basic principles, the choices become easier.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You'll Need:

  • Hair chart
  1. Step 1

Decide if you want a permanent, semi-permanent or temporary color. Permanent colors will stay on your hair through multiple washings. As your hair grows, there is a clear demarcation between the new hair and the colored hair. Semi-permanent colors last approximately 12 to 24 washings. As the color fades, the new hair growth is not as noticeable. The temporary colors last approximately six washings, so they are good for those who want to experiment with color.

  2. Step 2

Determine why you are coloring your hair. If you want to hide gray, then you will need a hair coloring that is close to your color or one shade lighter than your natural hair color. If you want a slight change to your regular hair color, go up to two shades lighter or darker. If you want your hair to grow out with a natural look, consider highlighting your hair with two or more colors.

  3. Step 3

Complement your skin tone. Whatever color your hair was as a child will probably work for you now. If you were blond as a child, you most likely can still be blond as an adult. Avoid going too many shades darker than your own hair color. Darker hair on lighter skin tones will make your face look ghostly.

  4. Step 4
Let the hairdresser color your hair red.

Let the hairdresser color your hair red.

Consider red. If you want a dramatic change, consider red. Most skin tones can wear red. You will want a blend of warm and neutral tones. If you decide on red, have a hairdresser do the coloring.

  5. Step 5

Learn about highlighting. Highlighting is the process of coloring individual strands of hair with two or more colors. What is good about highlighting is its ability to blend into your hair and not show the roots as quickly as an all over permanent color. Go to a salon for highlighting.
