How to Install a T-Post Fence

Building a permanent fence with vinyl or wooden posts takes hours to build and can cost hundreds of dollars. To contain an area for a short time or permanently with a much cheaper and simpler installation, you can install a T-post fence easily by yourself.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • T-post insulators
  • T-posts
  • 10- to 14-gauge high tensile wire
  • AC fence charger
  • T-post driver
  • Measuring wheel
  • Extension cord
  1. Step 1

Hammer a T-post with a T-post driver 1 to 1 1/2 feet into the ground. Make sure the top of the T-shape is on the outside of your fence (the area you're containing).

  2. Step 2

Hammer in a T-post every 40 feet around the perimeter of the area you are containing.

  3. Step 3

Place a T-post insulator on the inside of every T-post.

  4. Step 4

Unroll the wire around this perimeter. Tie the end to the first corner T-post where you start unrolling. Attach the wire into every insulator as you unroll the wire.

  5. Step 5

Hammer in another T-post 3 feet away from the fence. Hammer this T-post in an area along the fence that is closest to a AC 110V outlet. String an extension cord to this post from the outlet.

  6. Step 6

Hang the fence charger on the T-post. Wrap the ground wire from the charger to the T-post it's hanging on. Wrap the "hot" electric from the charger to the wire on the fence you just built.

  7. Step 7

Plug in the fence charger. Turn on the fence charger.
