The Dell Inspiron B130 is a laptop designed for student and home office use. In its standard configuration, it comes equipped with a 1.5 GHz Celeron processor, 256 MB of DDR2 SDRAM, 40 GB of hard drive space and a 15.4 inch TFT display. The CMOS battery in your Inspiron B130 laptop is used to provide power to its BIOS memory and on-board clock. If the BIOS settings on your laptop reset between system shutdowns, it may be necessary to replace the CMOS battery. To do so, simply follow the directions below.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dell Inspiron B130 laptop
  • Replacement CMOS battery
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Plastic scribe or pry tool

    Replacement

  1. Step 1

Save your data and close any active applications. Turn off your laptop. Disconnect the power cord and any attached peripherals. Remove any installed ExpressCards.

  2. Step 2

Turn the laptop over and locate the two battery release latches. Slide the smaller of the two latches to unlock the battery, then slide and hold the second latch while removing the battery; set the battery aside. Return the computer to an upright position and press the power button once.

  3. Step 3

Open the display fully and allow it to rest on your work surface. Locate the indentation on the right side of the hinge cover. Insert your plastic scribe or pry tool into the indentation and work the cover free of the laptop casing. Set the hinge cover aside.

  4. Step 4

Locate and remove the two screws securing the keyboard assembly in place. Raise the top edge of the keyboard until you have enough room to access the cable connection underneath. Disconnect the keyboard assembly from the system board. Set the assembly aside.

  5. Step 5

Locate and disconnect the cable connecting the existing CMOS battery to the system board. Work the cable free of the metal guides and remove the CMOS battery. Set the old battery aside. Run the cable for the replacement battery through the metal guides. Connect the cable to the system board. Seat the CMOS battery in same manner as the old battery.

  6. Step 6

Reconnect the keyboard assembly to the system board. Reseat the keyboard assembly by inserting the front edge first, then lowering the rear edge. Screw the keyboard assembly securely in place.

  7. Step 7

Replace the hinge cover and apply firm pressure until it snaps into place. Reinsert the battery. Reconnect the power cord and any disconnected peripherals. Reinsert any previously removed ExpressCards. Installation is now complete.

Tips & Warnings
  • You may purchase a replacement CMOS battery from an online supplier (see link in Resources).
  • Do not use a metal tool, such as a screwdriver, to remove your hinge cover, as this may cause cosmetic damage. Do not attempt to disassemble, recharge or incinerate your old CMOS battery.
