How to Get Winmx to Work on Vista

WinMX is a freeware file-sharing application. In September of 2005, the program development and the file-sharing network it used was shutdown due to threat of legal action from the Recording Industry Association of America.

Though the program can no longer be downloaded from the official WinMX site, the last production version can be obtained from several mirrors. A patch must be applied to the program so that it can work on a different network, since the original network has been shut down.

Instructions

    • 1

Download a copy of WinMX from any mirror that still has it available. All of the versions are compatible with Windows Vista. The latest stable (non-beta) version released was 3.53, and is the best choice for download. If prompted, choose to "Open" or "Run" the file, and allow the download to complete.

    • 2

Open the file that was just downloaded by clicking on it, or clicking "Open." The exact process used to launch the installer may vary depending on the browser in use. Walk through the steps in the installer by clicking "Next" as needed, and allow the installation to finish before continuing.

    • 3

Download and install the WinMX community patch, using the same method that was used to install the program itself. The patch will direct the program to a file-sharing network that is still in operation. Once the patch has finished installing, the WinMX application is now fully functional under Windows Vista.

Tips & Warnings

  • Only use file-sharing applications to download files that are not copyright protected.

Actually, the community patch works with vista, and winmx, but mxpie 3.6 patch does too, and a new one called Cake.exe patch made by Pri.
