A petition is a formal request that is made to an authority in writing. In the United States, petitions are usually legal documents from groups or individuals who want to have a case heard before a court. For example, an individual may file a Tax Court petition if he feels the Internal Revenue Service has unfairly accused him of a tax deficiency.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Write in your name, address and phone number.

  2. Step 2

Write out your grievance. Explain whom you have a grievance with and why you are bringing it to the attention of the court or other authority.

  3. Step 3

Find the appropriate address to file the petition. This will depend on the authority you are petitioning (such as a court, or local or state government).

  4. Step 4

Contact the authority directly to be sure you have completed all of its requirements for petitioning before filing and to make sure there are no forms or other information required to complete the filing. You may be able to find the contact information on the authority's website.

  5. Step 5

Send the petition by certified mail.
