How to Make an Explosion Gift Box

Explosion gift boxes are the latest trend in do-it-yourself gifts. These fun and original gift boxes start small, but explode open when you take the box top off. They are great for pictures and other small gifts. Make explosion gift boxes to give to your family or friends.

Things You'll Need

  • 4 sheets 12-by-12 inch cardstock
  • Paper trimmer
  • Metal ruler
  • Adhesive
  • Embellishments of your choice (stickers, ribbons, brads, etc.)
  • Trim two of your pieces of cardstock to 11 by 11 inches and 10 by 10 inches.

  • Score four lines onto three of your pieces of cardstock (the 12 by 12 inch piece, the 11 by 11 inch piece, and the 10 by 10 inch piece) like a tic-tac-toe grid.

  • Cut out the corners from each piece of cardstock, so you're left with pieces that look like plus signs (+). Lay all pieces on top of each other, with the smallest size on the top and the largest on the bottom.

  • Embellish the different flaps of cardstock with pictures, stickers, sentiments and other decorative elements. When you're done, glue the bases of each piece of cardstock together.

  • Next, work on the lid. Trim your last piece of cardstock down to 8 by 8 inches. Score folds in the same tic-tac-toe pattern, but space the lines 2 inches from the cardstock's edge.

  • Score the corners of the cardstock diagonally, as shown by the dark lines in the diagram. Fold the lid into a cube and glue at the corners to secure.

  • Place a small gift in the center of the box bases, and then fold the flaps around it. Place the lid on the top.

Tips & Warnings

  • Embellish your explosion gift box with things that reflect the receiver's personality.
  • Make sure the glue from one step is fully dried before moving onto the next step. This ensures that your box will stay secure.
