How to String a Baitcast Fishing Reel

Bait casting reels are mounted just above the fishing rod handle and are controlled by the user's thumb. Unlike spin-casting reels, where the line slips out of the top of the reel as the line runs off of the spool, the spool on a bait casting reel actually revolves as the line exits the spool. Bait casting reels have become more and more popular, due in part to the reel's ability to withdraw line around the spool faster than other types of reels. For each turn of the handle, the bait casting reel's wide spool revolves four times. Thankfully, it is generally easier to install new fishing line onto a bait casting reel than on other types of reels.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Insert the fishing line through the plastic guides which run down the length of the rod. Begin by feeding the line through the small guide located on the tip of the rod.

  2. Step 2

Insert the fishing line through the level wind located on the top of the reel, where the reel faces the tip of the rod. As the reel's handle is turned, the level wind moves back and forth to ensure that the line feeds into the reel properly.

  3. Step 3

Wrap the line around the reel one time, then tie the line into a knot around the reel.

  4. Step 4

Place the spool which contains the new fishing line on the floor, the place the tip of the rod next to the new fishing line.

  5. Step 5

Turn the handle on the side of the reel in a clockwise direction to load the new fishing line onto the reel. Pay particular attention to the reel as the line wraps around it to avoid knots or coils.

  6. Step 6

Cut the fishing line between the rod tip and the spool which contained the new fishing line.
