When milk or milk products stain your carpet, it can be difficult to remove after it dries. Waiting allows the milk to soak deep into the carpet, padding and even the subfloor. Milk spills should be cleaned from carpet as soon as possible to avoid set in stains and odors. But there are some remedies that work even on old stains.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Water
  • Dishsoap
  • Ammonia
  • Vinegar
  • Meat tenderizer
  • Cleaning solvent
  • White paper towel
  1. Step 1

Blot up as much milk as possible with white paper towel. Step on the paper towels to help them absorb the milk as fast as possible.

  2. Step 2

Pour meat tenderizer on a wet milk stain and let it sit for one hour. Then, vacuum the powder up.

  3. Step 3

Mix 1/2 cup of water with 1 tsp. of mild clear dishsoap that doesn't contain bleach. Blot the milk stain with the solution and white paper towel.

  4. Step 4

Mix 1/2 cup of water with 1 tbsp. of ammonia. Turn on fans and open windows if possible. Wearing rubber gloves, blot the stain with the ammonia solution.

  5. Step 5

Mix 2/3 cup of cold water with 1/3 cup of white distilled vinegar. Blot the milk stain with the vinegar solution, working from the outer edge toward the middle of the stain.

  6. Step 6

Buy cleaning solvent from a hardware, grocery, or drugstore. Blot the stain with a very small amount of the solvent. Rinse the area with cold water to avoid setting the stain.

Tips & Warnings
  • Test all cleaning solutions on an inconspicuous area to make sure they don't damage your carpet.
  • Use cleaning solvent in a well-ventilated area. Do not mix ammonia with bleach or cleaners containing bleach.
